"But in the lulz-obsessed echo chamber of online message boards—lulz being the questionable pleasure of hurting someone's feelings on the Web—"You fail it" became the shorthand way to gloat about any humiliation, major or minor."
All I can say is - the bold is fail

I just really find internet phenomena fascinating culturally. The stereotypical image of a web-browsing, forum-posting, message board-visiting internet user was a pimply, squeaky-voiced, prepubescent teenager until earlier this decade. Now tons of cultural idiosyncrasies have their roots in those very places.
My, how the times be a-changin.

People who say 'Fail' in normal conversation bother me.
I'd prefer it if people said, "YO MOMMA"

I don't enjoy the fact that the intarwebz super-secret clubhouse is becoming popular now.

Just a warning before people start believing this word is popular: I've yet to see "FAIL" or "epic fail" break beyond being an internet forum or gaming fad. I've been exposed to this for maybe 2 years now, and it hasn't caught on by anyone I know who didn't use the word in the first place. Anytime someone uses it, I start to assume it's someone spending too much time in internet subculture. Sorry to disappoint, but very little of popular geek culture hits mainstream.
The latest pop phenomenons that I've seen have all been spread through politics and news media outlets. If you want to know something that's more contagious, it's throwing the word 'absolutely' into conversation. I think that originally came from people talking about sports.
